Where Guy Fawkes was born

The inn stands on the site where Guido (Guy) Fawkes was born in 1570. He was baptised across the street in St Michael le Belfrey church, in the shadow of York Minster.

The Fawkes family once owned the property, which is why, by tradition, we don’t celebrate Bonfire Night.
We’ve restored the neighbouring former Jackson Stops building as new Heritage bedrooms.
A hidden, overgrown courtyard is now York city centre’s largest landscaped beer garden, beneath the Minster.

Candlelit dining near York Minster

Our AA Rosette restaurant is lit by candles and gas lamps, with tables looking out on the Minster and St Michael le Belfrey. Hearty pub classics sit alongside finer dining, all from local, seasonal ingredients.

Is there parking?

Guy Fawkes Inn has no on-site parking. The nearest public car park is Marygate Car Park, about a 5–10 minute walk away.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and all three beer gardens. Dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant or in the bedrooms.

Is the inn accessible?

Because the buildings are historic, some areas have steps, uneven floors, narrow corridors or compact layouts. If you have specific access needs, please contact us before booking and we’ll help you choose the right room.

Are children welcome?

Yes, families are welcome to stay, eat and drink with us.

Do you serve breakfast?

Yes, breakfast is served every day in our restaurant, and it’s included in some room rates.

Do you celebrate Bonfire Night?

No. As the family home of the Fawkes family, tradition says we don’t, a custom shared by other Fawkes-associated buildings in York, including St Peter’s School.
